PhD Student (m/f/d)

The Digital Building Technologies group (DBT) at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), Department of Architecture (D-ARCH), is looking for a Ph.D. student in the area of large-scale additive manufacturing for architecture.

Project background:

• Work on Digital Process Chain for Hollow Core Extrusion project
• Collaboration with Computational Design Lab (CDL) of Prof. Bernd Bickel
• Investigate extrusion of hollow profiles (HC3DP) for large-scale 3D printing in architecture
• Focus on controlling deposition, optimizing material factors and printing parameters

Job description:

• Lead work package on hardware and process development for HC3DP
• Investigate nozzle designs and extrusion profiles
• Collaborate on closed-loop control systems with machine learning
• Work on design for fabrication workflows
• Teach bachelor in architecture, supervise master's theses

Profile:

• Master's degree in architecture or related discipline
• Strong interest/experience in computational design, digital fabrication, or robotics
• Previous academic research experience
• Passion for hands-on prototyping and theoretical work
• Highly motivated, creative, team player with excellent communication skills
• English language proficiency
